Bee Keeping for Beginners Course

2 days — 1st February and 7th March 2026

This Basic Beekeeping Course starts you on a journey of discovery and provides you with the basic knowledge you need to get started in the wonderful world of bees and beekeeping. This is only the start of your journey, and our range of courses, led by qualified, experienced, and skilled beekeepers, will continue to provide you with the learning skills you need to progress.

Saturday

Theory – Five Theory Modules

#1 THE EVOLUTION OF THE HONEYBEE

In this session we will look back over 40 million years to understand how the honeybee has evolved as a species, what is the survival method of this extraordinary insect and how have humans developed such a strong relationship with it? We will explore the earliest origins of beekeeping and understand how humans were responsible for migrating the honeybee across the globe and the benefit the honeybee brings as an apex pollinator.

#2 THE PROCESS OF HONEY MAKING

In the second lesson we will take your learning a little further and begin to understand the intimate relationship between the honeybee and the flora and fauna that exists within its foraging area. What do the bees collect when they are foraging and how do they then process those raw materials. How do the bees communicate with each other in order to identify rich sources of food and what do they do with these things when they get back to the colony?

#3 THE EVOLUTION OF BEEKEEPING AND THE INTRODUCTION OF THE BEEHIVE

In this session we will consider man managed to lure the bees out of hollow trees and into our little wooden boxes and the different types of hive are commonly used and how they developed? We take a close look at the components that comprise a modern beehive and the frames and wax foundation that is used to allow the bees to make a perfect home. We will also understand how the bees live in the beehive, their individual jobs, and routines.

#4 KEEPING OUR BEES ALIVE

Beekeeping is not as simple as just shoving a bunch of bees in a box and expecting a few jars of honey each year. They are precious insects and regarded as livestock and so in this lesson we will explain what diseases, pests and predators may place the colony in danger. We also consider the mistakes that beekeepers make which can lead to the collapse of the colony and the preparations beekeepers need to make throughout the year. We also consider the natural desire of the bees to swarm and what we can do to control or prevent this.

#5 STARTING OUT THROUGH TO EXTRACTING & PRESENTING THE CROP

We start by looking at the essential equipment you will need to start out as a beekeeper. Where do you buy it, what do you need, how much does it all cost, is my garden big enough? We also look at how to source bees and how you join local beekeeper support groups. So, you are now a beekeeper and at the end of your first season you have a whole load of honey….in this lesson we consider the different types of honey and the vast range of floral sources that it can come from. We consider the process of extracting the honey from the beehive and offer some advice and best practice on bottling, labelling, and selling your product. We will also look at how we might use other products from the beehive such as beeswax and propolis.

Sunday

Practical  — three practical modules

#1 Constructing a beehive

After this session you will be able to assemble flat pack beehives and frames. This will help you identify the parts of the beehive and have confidence in assembling hive parts and frames. There are many pitfalls, and a poorly constructed hive will lead to years of problems for both the colony and the beekeeper.

#2 The Smoker

In this session we start to understand the necessity for a smoker and why it is used. How do the bees react and why? We look at different types of smokers and most importantly we learn how to light it and keep it lit – sounds simple right?? However, many beekeepers struggle with this simple and basic piece of equipment, and this can lead to disaster!

#3 Hands – on session with the bees

Ok here you go….it is time to get the suit on, take that nicely lit smoker and wander up to the bees. This session brings all of the previous learning to life. You will work in pairs and get to open a hive and fully inspect the colonies. Our trainers will be on hand to demonstrate and guide you through the inspection. You will get to see several different types of hive and differing strengths of colonies.

Intermediate Bee Keeping Course

1 Day — 2026 dates to be confirmed

This course seeks to further develop your knowledge as a beekeeper. We will understand the complex biology of the honeybee and the lifecycle of each caste. We will take a much closer look at disease and how it can affect the colony and prevention strategies.

The lifecycle of the colony

In this session we will take a much more detailed look at the lifecycle of each of the three castes within the colony. How do they develop and what differentiates them from each other? We take a closer look at the process of swarming and what are the signs that this is about to happen and why clipping the wings of the queen is an accepted method of swarm prevention.

Being a beekeeper

In this session we begin to understand the requirements of good animal husbandry. What are the legal elements of being a beekeeper and what records do we need to keep? What are our moral and legal obligations to others and how can we mitigate risk? What are the key points throughout the year for intervention and key inspections and manipulations? We also take a look at the organisations that support beekeepers and the key annual exhibition and show schedule.

Honeybee diseases, parasitic pests & predators

This is an in-depth session in order to present key understanding of the different diseases that can affect our bees and the pests which predate on them. We learn about the signs and symptoms to help diagnose different conditions and the actions to take if we find them.

Common Mistakes

This session takes a look at why beekeepers typically fail and why colonies collapse. Winter losses can be a frustration to any beekeeper, and we consider the three main reasons behind this and how to identify and avoid them. The session closes with a Q&A session so that you can identify your knowledge gaps and consider where you want to take your newfound passion.

A lovely gift

I received the Honey Bee Happy as a small present from my husband. The packaging is great and to learn the ethics behind how it is made. Great to have a Facebook page where I am sure there is a bee named after me that I can try and spot buzzing about !

Delicious!

The purest and tastiest of raw honeys – it’s so pure you actually get a very subtle flavour of the flower from which the pollen was picked.

(In addition to this it doubles up as a great spot treatment!)
