Honey bees are living creatures and can be unpredictable in growth and development so please ensure that all preparations are in place before NUC collection (see list below). We understand spring/summer is a busy time of the year and we can hold your NUC(s) for a limited time if you are unable to collect on the specified day.
We would suggest preparing beehive equipment (floor, brood box, queen excluder, feeders and roofs etc) and your personal beekeeping equipment (bee suit, smoker and fuel, hive tools etc.) and a suitable location for your new colony to go. Our NUCs have 6 frame BS National frames, We would suggest using a BS National Hive for ease of transfer and uniformity.
If you are new to beekeeping, or looking to develop your basic knowledge, we would recommend joining one of our beginner beekeeping courses which are run by our very experienced beekeepers/Bee Farmers.

A NUC (nucleus colony) is a small but fully functioning honey bee colony. It contains a laying queen, worker bees, brood at different stages of development, honey and pollen stores, all established on frames ready to transfer into your own hive.
Buckfast bees are widely valued for their calm temperament, productivity and good colony management characteristics, making them a popular choice for both new and experienced beekeepers.
This depends on weather conditions, forage availability and how early in the season the colony is established. Some colonies may produce a surplus honey crop, while others will focus on building strength for winter.
Each NUC includes a marked Buckfast queen, brood in various stages of development, honey and pollen stores, and bees covering six British Standard National frames. The colony is supplied in a reusable wooden transport box.
You should have a suitable hive ready, including a floor, brood box, roof, feeders and any additional frames required. You will also need basic beekeeping equipment such as a bee suit, smoker and hive tool.
Possibly. Depending on weather conditions, forage availability and the strength of the colony, supplementary feeding may be beneficial while your bees establish themselves in their new hive.
NUCs are typically available during the spring and early summer. Honey bees develop according to weather and forage conditions. If a colony needs additional time to reach our standards, collection dates may be adjusted. We will contact you with collection details once your bees are ready and will keep you informed throughout the process if there are likely to be delays.
If you are unable to collect your NUC on the specified collection date, we can hold it for a limited period. Please contact us as soon as possible to discuss arrangements.
Because our priority is the bees, we are always happy to offer guidance and support to help you get your new colony established successfully. If you have any concerns after collecting your bees, simply get in touch and we’ll do our best to help. You can also book one of our courses where you will get more help.
Yes. All our queens are marked according to the recognised annual colour system, making them easier to identify during hive inspections.
NUCs can be transported safely by car. We recommend bringing a suitable vehicle with good ventilation and securing the NUC transport box so it remains stable during the journey home. To cause the bees the least stress as possible we recommend travelling directly home after collection and avoiding leaving the bees in a hot vehicle for extended periods.
